Multi-plane imaging is a method of obtaining sharp images of two (or more) object planes, separated by a distance that exceeds the depth-of-field of the camera lens. A well-known variant of this method is used in cinematography for decades. Recently, a new kind of multi-plane imaging has been developed by the author of this text and this is the primary subject of this document.

The chapter "Basics" presents some fundamental knowledge regarding optics, mostly imaging. In "Cinematography" the application of multi-plane imaging is described in movies. Finally, the "Thermal lensing" chapter reviews my efforts to implement a new version of multi-plane imaging. In the last chapter you will find several examples of application of this new technology in micro- and macroscoping imaging.
